New Frontiers in Digital Technologies and Artificial Intelligence for Evidence-Based Medicine and Research in the Diagnosis and Rehabilitation of Childhood Disabilities

This Summer School is organized by the University of Pisa as a part of the project funded by the European Commission “AInCP” and by the PNC “Fit4MedRob”. It also has received support from the European Academy of Childhood Disability (EACD) and the IRCCS Fondazione Stella Maris.

This 5-days training course will offer a practical and immersive experience guiding participants through the entire process from the creation to the development of multidisciplinary research projects. The use of new technological and digital approaches and Articial Intelligence methods for the diagnosis and the rehabilitation of childhood disabilities will be envisaged.

The different perspectives coming from clinical, technological, ethical, socio-economical and lived experience will be deeply presented and analyzed in order to achieve a comprehensive knowledge of the various multidisciplinary aspects, specific needs and interconnections for designing and developing successful and exploitable innovative research.

The course faculty will be constituted of international experts in the different multidisciplinary fields covered.

The 5-day course will be organized in:

  • Morning sessions: lectures focused on theoretical teaching organized in lectures covering theoretical frameworks, models and challenges;
  • Afternoon sessions: practical workshops where participants will be directly involved to practice design and elaboration of joint research in the field;
  • Meet the expert sessions (morning and/or evening): dedicated time for personal experience shared by expert in the field.

The main daily topics will be:

  • Day 1: Clinicians perspective on the development of technological and digital approaches, with a focus on AI;
  • Day 2: Engineers and data scientists’ role;
  • Day 3: Insights into the needs of parents and persons with lived experience for the creation and use of technological, digital and AI solutions;
  • Day 4: Ethical and economic issues
  • Day 5: Roundtable for codesign the future research projects in multidisciplinary setting.

The Summer School will be held on campus in Pisa, at Centro congressi Le Benedettine, Piazza San Paolo a Ripa D'Arno, 16.

Aim

The aims of the Summer School are to:

  1. raise awareness of the participants about the practical pathways from the creation to the implementation of the use of technology in childhood research;
  2. elevate the participants’ knowledge on the multidisciplinary approach for planning innovative methods and tools to be integrated in this field;
  3. promote international collaboration to advance the creation, design, development and validation of new technologies

At the end of the course the participants will:

  1. be familiar with the recommended methods of multidisciplinary approach in designing research studies incorporating the technology;
  2. have knowledge to develop and promote a research pathway for the use of technology in childhood rehabilitation;
  3. be aware of the specic challenges and perspective of different stakeholder’s including clinicians, engineers, economists, and people with lived experience;
  4. be able to apply the newly acquired knowledge to advance their practice clinical and research career;
  5. be able to build on their knowledge to foster national and international collaboration networks in this field.
