Unipi Team Leader: prof. Walter Salvatore, Dip. di Ingegneria Civile e Industriale
Desdemona aims to develop novel design methods, systems, procedures and technical solutions to integrate sensing and automation technologies for self-inspection and self-monitoring of steel structures.
We identify, develop and test innovative technological solutions to enlarge structural life of steel infrastructure, to decrease the cost associated to inspection and maintenance and to improve human safety.
We develop:
- Procedure for steel defect detection through data fusion of processed images and vibration measurements;
- Automation in defect image acquisition by Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV), cable-driven and ground mobile robots and automatic data storage in bridge management systems;
- Embedding sensor systems to revalorize and to transform steel elements and structures into self-diagnostic elements
- Data-driven automatic procedure for alert in monitored structures
The project includes design and development of:
- Several experimental lab-based apparatusù
- Case studies of real steel structures equipped by an automatic and robotic embedded inspection system spread across the European involved countries
