At the school of Engineering of the University of Pisa, the new industrial revolution starts with “students 4.0”

From July 17 to 28, Pisa becomes an international campus with the Summer School on the Internet of Things, organized by the Department of Information Engineering. Key moments on July 21st and 25th with two public workshops held by the leading ICT world companies.

The second edition of the “Enabling Technologies for the Internet of Things” Summer School will host about thirty students from all over the world who will have the opportunity to attend an intensive course on one of the core issues of Industry 4.0, that related to the network of the interconnected objects (IoT) that acquire intelligence by being able to communicate data and access information.

IoT is one of the major enabling technologies for the new industrial revolution - comment the organizers of the School Sergio Saponara and Giuliano Manara, lecturers of Electronics and Electromagnetic Fields at the Department of Engineering - That’s why both the academic world and the enterprise must converge in students trainings. This is why the School sees support from both the University of Pisa and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers
(IEEE), the largest company of engineers and scientists in the field of electrical and electronic engineering, but also from the multinational INTEL, since it is also necessary for companies to train young people on future technologies by choosing the industry's leading experts at the international level. The course is held by teachers from Universities around the world: Pisa, Kiel, Pavia, Grenoble, Modena, Tarragona".

This second edition sees in fact a big gamble on student training made by industries, who will act as protagonists in two key events, also open to the public:

  • On July 21st, the Workshop “IoT Industry Special Day" will be attended by STMicroelectronics, TIM, Anritsu, Keysight, LFoundry, IDS, PurePowerControl, Zerynth, Cubit, which will illustrate the new technological and training trends in the electronics and ICT sectors For the Internet of things;
  • On July 25th, the "INTEL IoT Day of Functional Safety" will be held by INTEL on the theme of functional safety and reliability, a key issue, since, according to the multinational’s estimates, by 2020, two hundred billion of smart objects will be part of the Internet of Things. This new scenario will pave the way to innovative business models and will bring new experiences in everyday life. One among the most important challenges will be related to these systems’ safety because in safety-critical contexts, a fault could even jeopardize the human life.

Both the Summer School and the two Workshops - concludes Giuseppe Anastasi, Director of the Department of Information Engineering - are part of the Department strategic actions on Industry 4.0, aimed to build bridges between world of research and business on some of the key competencies and technologies for the new industrial revolution. It is necessary to find a common language in order to match the needs of industries with the new technologies discovered by research. It is for this reason that student training should be the result of a combined effort”.
