Ageing and Cardiovascular System A Multidisciplinary Approach
Convegno
Andrea Stoccoro (Questo indirizzo email è protetto dagli spambots. È necessario abilitare JavaScript per vederlo.) entro lunedì 11 Novembre.
Rationale and objectives
Addressing the ageing of the general population is a global challenge that involves both developed and developing countries. It is therefore crucial to ensure healthy, active and sustainable ageing for national health systems by keeping the elderly population in optimal health and preventing the onset of cardiometabolic diseases. Ageing, oxidative stress (OS) and inflammation play a key role in the development of cardiovascular diseases (CVD), the main cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. The concept of “Oxi-Inflamm-Aging” is based on the observation that low-grade oxidative and inflammatory processes, commonly seen in the elderly and others, contribute to CV risk. Furthermore, perivascular adipose tissue (PVAT), which is in close physical contact with the vessel, is crucial in preserving healthy vascular function. Its premature ageing is associated with tissue metabolic dysfunction and pro-inflammatory phenotype. Understanding the mechanisms linking inflammation and ageing, as well as those implicated in endothelial dysfunction, OS, genomic instability and PVAT alteration could reveal new therapeutic targets to sustain cardiovascular “health” and provide options for addressing the ageing population worldwide. The conference, with the participation of leading experts, aims to examine and understand the key processes of ageing at the cardiovascular and metabolic levels and to identify pharmacological strategies to prevent and slow them down.
