EUROPEAN RESEARCH COUNCIL (ERC)
The European Research Council (ERC) is the most prestigious European agency for research funding. Its mission is to retain and attract to Europe the best researchers from all over the world, regardless of nationality, age and gender, selected exclusively on the criterion of scientific excellence.
ERC funding is awarded to individual researchers to develop cutting-edge research projects in any discipline (life sciences, physical sciences and engineering, social sciences and humanities). Project proposals are free (curiosity driven), and not tied to predefined themes (bottom-up).
In the last few years, the University of Pisa has obtained fourteen ERC grants in the humanities, medicine, physics, mathematics, chemistry and information engineering, amounting to a total funding of over 17 million euros. Nine ERC projects are currently underway, funded under the Horizon 2020 program.
